A short monologue by Martin Baena.

Night. A MAN on a payphone:

Man: …because I, because I, I, I am not innerested.(Pause)  No, no, no: it’s not. It’s not personal. It’s not about you. It has nothing to do with you. (Pause) Because you don’t listen. Because you don’t…. y’ see? Because you don’t… (Pause) Hello? Hello are you there? (Pause) Hello, can you… can you hear me!? – Look, look: put dad on the phone. (Pause) Put him on. (Pause) Mom? Mom, put dad on. Please. (Pause) I don’t care in what he has to say. (Pause) What is it with this family? What is it? Listen: listen. (Pause) Mom? Listen! (Pause) Yes? Dad. Yes, I did. I did talk to him… (Pause) Because he doesn’t… because he doesn’t care what I have to say about it. Because he… (Pause) Dad? (Pause) Dad… because he doesn’t…. (Pause) Goddamn it! Because he doesn’t listen to what I have to say. (Long Pause) Fine, fine: put him on. (Pause) Hello? (Pause) Uh-huh. (Pause) Listen… will you just? Will you just. For a moment. Please? (Pause) Hello? What? (Pause) Yeah. Yeah, I’ll call you back.
