The Spokesman

by Martin Baena

Characters: Prophet, God

Setting: A mountain

 Lights up

Prophet: (enter, catching his breath) O’ Lord… O’ Lord, most high, I have done as you commanded. I have gone unto my people and, as per your instructions, O’ Lord, I have told them to watch for the signs so they may know you speak through your humble servant. But Lord, you did not give my people the sign. My people grew angry and cast me out. They have called me a liar. A fucking liar, O’ Lord. Why did you not show your sign so they may know you. Why, O’ Lord?

God: (beat) Because…

Prophet: (beat) Ah, ah,… I see. Yes. And what would you have me do, O’ Lord? (beat) Shall I return unto my people? Should I… should I open up a small business? What? (beat) Lord? (beat) Okay, well…just, uh, call me when you think of something… I’ll, uh, be around, I guess.

Lights down
